It was a sad end to the Burnett St shops on Saturday as a result of the various quakes and aftershocks. I feel for the great businesses who had to move when the building was red stickered and then demolished. Ashburton doesn’t seem to have many older character type buildings and this was a real loss for the centre of town. Hopefully we don’t demolish the railway station and build concrete slabs instead.
It was great to attend the Gym Company Duathlon this morning. It was a crisp and sunny Mid Canterbury morning. This was race 2 in the series and it was great to see it was supported by young, old, families and businesses. I am thinking of entering race 3 in July as it looks so much fun. Well done to the organizers and volunteers who made this great event happen. It has been running for over 5 years. John Moore and his team have done a wonderful job in creating a great community based multi-sport event.
Great time at the very wet and muddy Mt Somers Bike Race 2011. Competitors had a wonderful time and the organization from the Mayfield & District Lions Club was superb. From logistics to safety and food the volunteer team were amazing and left nothing to chance. Check out the video on AshburtonTV. www.ashburtontv.co.nz
What a great time at this years Methven A&P Show. I must admit to having alot of fun. A few highlights….The sheep colouring competition. That’s right kids were given chalk and told to colour in a real life sheep. Lots of crazy drawings and the sheep didn’t seem to mind. Secondly, loved the Wood Chopping competitions. It’s full on action with wood flying everywhere. I guess it reminds me of my granddad and uncles who farmed in the Methven area. Well done Methven A&P Association on another great event. If you missed the event check out the videos on AshburtonTV: www.ashburtontv.co.nz
Wow what a huge success the Multi Cultural Bite 2011 was this year. So much diversity, dance and food. It was an awesome time to celebrate what makes Ashburton an amazing place to live and work. It was beautiful to see so many cultures coming together and sharing their national food and customs.
Big thanks must go to the organizers of the event.

Great to be at the River Trail Challenge 2011 today. It was a fantastic event with lots of different sporting events happening at the same time. The Ashburton Lions did a super job organizing the cyclists, kids and runners. Check out the videos at www.ashburtontv.co.nz it will make you wish you had been there.
Ashburton district events started off with a bang. The Inaugural Summer Theatre School attracted 63 students from 6 to 18 years and was held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. A great time of learning and inspiration.
Also this week the 48th South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament attracted teams from around the South Island and was another huge success….
AshburtonTV will continue to cover news and events from around the district and showcase the great district we live in….
Great night filming some of our budding local talent at Artbeat Variety Concert. The stand out highlight for me was Michael Lilley’s drum solo. What a talented young man!
Great to attend the civic reception today for our Commonwealth Games medal winners. This is the official letter from Prime Minister John Key for our successful Commonwealth Games athletes and read out when they were honored at their Ashburton civic reception.
It was great filming the opening of the Sucessus art exhibition at the Heather Sarin Galerie last Saturday. Art is alive and well in the Ashburton district and the exhibition is just another example of this. The exhibition focuses on the lives of two famous local personalities David McPhail and Phill Hooper. I recommend you take some time and visit the gallery on Creek Rd, Ashburton.
